Japan’s Nagoya reels from record rain, stranding commuters and flooding city
The weather chaos injured 41 people, damaged 200 vehicles and forced 1,600 residents to take shelter at evacuation centres
Many commuters and students were stranded for the night in Nagoya after transport was paralysed due to the rain. Around 1,600 people had taken shelter at evacuation centres as of 7pm on Tuesday and 200 vehicles had been damaged by the rain as of 4am on Wednesday, local authorities said.
In the vicinity of Nagoya Station on Wednesday morning, many people headed to work looking exhausted after being unable to go home, including a 23-year-old woman from neighbouring Kasugai who spent the night at a karaoke venue near the station with a friend.
The Japan Meteorological Agency warned on Wednesday of continuing heavy rain across wide swathes of the country through Thursday due to an active front, urging vigilance for landslides, flooding and rising rivers.
In areas including the Tokai region, even small amounts of additional rain could heighten disaster risks due to loosened ground.
