Too much heat and too much humidity — concert cancelled. This is what happened yesterday evening at the Jesuit college in Mazara del Vallo, where the Sicilian Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Fayçal Karoui, was scheduled to perform, accompanying French accordionist Richard Galliano, a renowned interpreter of jazz and tango music. The orchestra members, however, decided not to play due to the heat and high humidity. The announcement was made by Flora Marrone, president of the Amici della Musica association, and the audience responded with a chorus of boos. The French accordionist, however, decided to perform as a soloist.
"Last night's event achieved the goal we had set for ourselves: bringing an artist of Richard Galliano's calibre to Mazara del Vallo," said Germana Abbagnato, the municipal councillor for culture. "Galliano did much more than perform: he gave the city a performance of the highest level, demonstrating once again that great artists put the audience first and know how to transform any circumstance into a moment of great music. Our most sincere thanks go to him for the sensitivity, professionalism and respect he showed towards the city and all the spectators present."
