The suspect in the killing of 21-year-old university student Thaissa Gabriely de Oliveira Marques in the parking lot of a gym in Londrina was charged this Monday (21) by the Public Prosecutor's Office of Paraná with feminicide and attempted rape. According to the 14th Prosecution Office of Londrina, the victim suffered 44 stab wounds.
A nutrition student at UniFil (Filadélfia University Center), Thaissa was killed on September 11 at her workplace. The suspect, Gabriel de Andrade, 21, was arrested in the act and, according to the Military Police, admitted to committing the crime.
The charges were filed with the State Court. If accepted, Gabriel will become a defendant and will be tried before a jury — which is responsible for intentional crimes (where there is intent) against life in Brazil.
This reporter sent a WhatsApp message at 6:16 p.m. on Monday to the law firm Penha & Vainer Advogados Associados, responsible for the suspect's defense, but received no response before the publication of this article.
In a previous statement on Friday (18), the firm said the case should be analyzed "with responsibility, serenity and, above all, based on the body of evidence."
The lawyers also stated on that occasion that there are elements that need to be clarified, such as "the alleged confession" and "aspects related to the suspect's neurodevelopmental condition."
"The defense does not intend to draw conclusions through the press. Its commitment is to ensure that all circumstances are investigated in a technical manner, respecting due process of law, adversarial proceedings, and the right to a full defense," the statement continued.
According to the Civil Police and the Prosecutor's Office, the student was killed following an attempted rape in the gym's parking lot, where she worked. The venue had not yet officially opened, and she worked promoting the establishment, distributing flyers and presenting the space to potential clients.
"Feigning interest in touring the gym's facilities, the perpetrator lured the victim inside the establishment and attempted to rape her, coercing her through violence and serious threats, using a rope and a knife. The victim managed to free herself and run to the parking lot, where she was caught by the defendant, who struck her with multiple stab wounds," the Prosecutor's Office stated.
In the charges, prosecutors argue that the fact that the crime was committed "using cruel means, considering the large number of blows inflicted, the deception and the use of resources that hindered the victim's ability to defend herself" justifies an increase in the sentence for feminicide.
