Cabinet Reshuffle: Final Personnel Package Expected to Be Announced
Chief of Staff Frei is set to succeed the resigned parliamentary group leader Spahn. Chancellor Merz has already made this public. On Friday, he is expected to announce how the reshuffling within his cabinet will proceed.
Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz could officially confirm this morning how he intends to restructure his cabinet following the resignation of parliamentary group leader Jens Spahn. In addition to the already announced appointment of a new parliamentary group leader, four further personnel decisions are expected to be made.
On Wednesday, Merz announced that Chief of Staff Thorsten Frei is to move to the helm of the parliamentary group as Spahn's successor. According to consistent media reports, Health Minister Nina Warken is set to take over Frei's current position as the new Chief of Staff. Warken, in turn, is to be replaced by the current CDU Secretary General Linnemann.
According to information from dpa, Franziska Hoppermann could then become the new Secretary General of the CDU. In addition, Digital State Secretary Philipp Amthor is reportedly set to move to the Chancellery as Federal-State Commissioner.
However, there is still no official confirmation of the new appointments beyond the parliamentary group leadership post. It also remains entirely unclear who will take over Hoppermann's position as party treasurer and who will succeed Amthor at the Digital Ministry.
Merz had already hinted at a broader cabinet reshuffle. "It could be an opportunity to reconsider the composition of the federal government," Merz said regarding Spahn's resignation last Sunday in a ZDF summer interview.
