GENEVA, September 29. /TASS/. Moscow ranks among the world's 50 largest innovation clusters in 2026, with the Russian capital placing exactly 50th, between Brazil's Sao Paulo and the US city of Minneapolis, in an annual ranking published by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), a UN agency.
Moscow ranked ahead of several major world capitals like Helsinki, Dublin, Vienna, Rome, Oslo and Warsaw. Lomonosov Moscow State University, the Russian Academy of Sciences and the National Research Center Kurchatov Institute led the Moscow cluster in scientific publications.
The top five clusters this year were Shenzhen-Hong Kong-Guangzhou, Tokyo-Yokohama, San Jose-San Francisco, Beijing and Seoul.
WIPO said the ranking, part of the Global Innovation Index, maps where innovation activity is concentrated worldwide. It draws in part on patent applications and scientific publications to identify "areas with the densest populations of inventors, scientific authors, and venture capitalists." The index aims to inform national economic policy.
WIPO is a specialized UN agency that addresses legal, technical and organizational issues concerning intellectual property protection. Its experts have published the Global Innovation Index since 2007.
