"Thank you Italy, I would like to always speak Italian but then I risk saying things like 'my cat drinks cappuccino', I love you". Ironic and engaging with the audience in Piazza Eremitani, Suzanne Vega inaugurated her Italian tour in front of two thousand people as part of the Castello Festival in Padova.
The show is titled "Flying with Angels," like the album, her tenth of her career, which sees her return with new songs after a break of two decades. On the setlist, before the singles that made her a global star such as "Luka" or "Tom's Diner," much of the new repertoire and some tributes, including one to Elvis Costello with "Lipstick Vogue" and to her friend Lou Reed with "Walk on the Wild Side." It is during "Chambermaid," a tribute to Bob Dylan's "I Want You," that Suzanne Vega lets slip a delightful anecdote: "I opened a Bob Dylan concert in Norway in 2012, and after my performance backstage I stole a kiss from Bob, who told me 'I'd like to see you again'. I never saw him again. It was the shortest relationship of my life. But if Bob wants to see me again, he knows where to find me."
Suzanne Vega returns to the stage this evening in Rome at the Casa del Jazz, then on Thursday the 25th in Carpi, the following day in Monforte d'Alba, and Thursday the 25th the final stop of the Italian tour in Pisa.
