MUMBAI: The hearing of the three accused arrested in connection with the firing at actor Tiger Shroff’s car is underway at the 37th Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Mumbai on Wednesday. Police told the court that five more people had been arrested from Haryana and Delhi and were being brought to Mumbai. All the accused are allegedly linked to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang.
Police also informed the court that the weapons used in the firing are yet to be recovered. The accused allegedly destroyed the mobile phones used in the crime, police said.
Opposing police custody, the defence lawyer argued that the accused could not be remanded to police custody merely on the basis of recoveries. The lawyer maintained that the accused were innocent and that their custodial interrogation was not required.
The three key accused were brought to Mumbai from Kota, Rajasthan, early Wednesday and taken to the Anti-Extortion Cell of the Mumbai Crime Branch for interrogation after undergoing medical examinations. They were subsequently produced before the court.
The accused had been granted 48-hour transit remand by a court in Rajasthan to facilitate their transfer to Mumbai.
A defence lawyer had earlier argued that his client was already in custody during transit and had been questioned while being brought to Mumbai.
According to the Mumbai Crime Branch, the three alleged shooters were initially targeting another prominent Bollywood celebrity but allegedly shifted their focus to Shroff after finding that the other celebrity had tight security. Police have not disclosed the identity of the celebrity.
The firing took place around 7pm on Sunday in Juhu when Shroff was leaving a football club. The actor escaped unhurt, while his driver sustained injuries.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday, Shroff’s team warned against the circulation of fabricated stories, unauthorised statements and AI-generated videos falsely attributed to the actor in connection with the incident. It urged media organisations and social media users to verify information and said legal action could be initiated against those creating or circulating misleading content.
