Russian Attack on Kryvyi Rih: Death Toll Rises at Shopping Center
Following the Russian drone attack on a shopping center in Kryvyi Rih, the death toll has risen to 16. Ukraine once again struck a Russian oil refinery and a logistics facility — this time not Wildberries.
The death toll from the Russian drone attack on a shopping center in the large southeastern Ukrainian city of Kryvyi Rih has risen to at least 16. Civil defense authorities reported nine people missing, including two children. Several critically injured individuals are being treated in hospital.
On Friday evening, initial reports spoke of 15 dead and 130 injured. The Russian military apparently first struck with a long-range drone, followed later by an attack with a second drone.
Attack in Two Waves
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also spoke of a two-wave attack: "Half an hour after the first strike and the outbreak of a fire, there was another attack targeting rescue workers," he said. "Such attacks are simply acts of terrorism."
An as yet unverified video shows a drone crashing into the roof of a building while smoke is already rising from the roof. The drones used are reported to have been equipped with jet engines. Russia is producing increasing numbers of drones of this type. They fly significantly faster than propeller-driven drones and are therefore harder to intercept.
Attacks Also in Kyiv
Russia also struck the Ukrainian capital Kyiv again overnight. At least one person was killed, authorities reported. A warehouse caught fire as a result. According to initially unverifiable statements from the Russian Defense Ministry, a railway depot containing locomotives was hit.
Attacks were also reported in the southern Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia. A drone attack killed one man and injured four others, the regional military administration stated.
According to the United Nations, the number of civilian casualties from the war in Ukraine rose sharply in recent months. In July, 437 civilians were killed — the highest number since the early months of the Russian invasion.
Ukraine Attacks Russian Online Retailer Ozon for First Time
Ukraine also carried out new strikes. According to reports from Ukrainian media, Kyiv again attacked an oil refinery in the Samara region — and for the first time also struck a warehouse belonging to Russian online retailer Ozon. The company confirmed an attack on its logistics center in the Samara region. The warehouse caught fire and 500 employees were evacuated to safety; however, there were also injuries, Ozon reported.
For weeks prior, Ukraine had repeatedly attacked Russia's largest online retailer, Wildberries. Industry experts estimate that the damage to that company alone runs into the billions.
Zelensky had previously announced that a separate Ukrainian drone strike hit an oil refinery in Perm, more than 1,600 kilometers from the Ukrainian border. The military airfield at Marinovka in the Russian Volgograd region was also struck, Zelensky said. The Russian online news portal Astra reported that the Ukrainian drone had set fire to a Lukoil-operated oil refinery in Perm.
Drone Attacks in Moscow
The Russian capital Moscow also reported new Ukrainian drone attacks in the morning. According to authorities, there were temporarily no takeoffs or landings at the capital's airports due to the alert.
