Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) is gearing up to introduce 200 state-of-the-art, air-conditioned Volvo buses into its massive state-wide fleet. This strategic and much-anticipated rollout aims to aggressively target and attract commuters who have increasingly leaned toward private luxury operators for intercity travel.
Transport minister and MSRTC chairperson Pratap Sarnaik announced the landmark initiative, noting that the new induction will comprise 170 sophisticated seating coaches and 30 ultra-comfortable sleeper coaches. The initiative promises an uncompromised blend of top-tier safety, ergonomic comfort, modern engineering, and premium customer service. “This is a watershed moment for public transit, as it marks the first time MSRTC is inducting Volvo buses on such an unprecedentedly massive scale,” Sarnaik highlighted.
Designed specifically to counter the appeal of private competitors, these new luxury vehicles will primarily cater to routes exceeding 250 kilometres. Commuters can look forward to plush 45-seater coaches optimised for smooth daytime journeys, alongside 30-to-45-seater sleeper coaches tailored for restful overnight travel, ensuring versatile options regardless of travel time.
A standout highlight of this modernisation drive is the overhauled, frictionless digital booking ecosystem. Tickets will not only be accessible via MSRTC’s official portal but will also integrate seamlessly with popular private digital travel platforms. This empowers passengers to check live schedules and secure bookings directly from their smartphones, eliminating the traditional hassle of visiting physical bus stations.
Furthermore, in an innovative push toward corporate-grade customer experience, MSRTC is partnering with specialised private hospitality agencies. Professionally trained staff will manage onboard amenities, passenger assistance, and meticulous cleanliness.
