Among Italians who travelled by plane in the past year, over 2.8 million travellers had their luggage stolen or lost. The airline permanently lost the luggage of 1.9 million people, more than 786,000 holidaymakers had their suitcase delivered late, while nearly 168,000 had it stolen at the airport, though without any liability on the part of the airline.
According to an analysis by Facile.it, against this backdrop, the share of travellers choosing to rely on insurance is growing. Indeed, among those who took out a travel policy in the past year, approximately 1.2 million people also included coverage for lost or stolen luggage.
"Travel insurance protects policyholders from a wide range of unexpected events that can arise during a holiday," explains Andrea Ghizzoni, managing director of insurance at Facile.it. "Before taking out coverage, however, it is necessary to carefully check the guarantees included, the presence of deductibles, co-payments or exclusions — all information that can be found in the companies' information booklets." Lost luggage insurance is a type of coverage offered as an extension of the traditional travel policy. With regard to permanent loss or theft, the policy allows reimbursement, within the limits of the maximum amounts, of the value of the lost items. For delayed suitcase delivery, on the other hand, reimbursement is provided for expenses incurred in purchasing essential goods. As for prices, according to the Facile.it analysis, for a travel policy that includes medical assistance and lost luggage coverage, premiums start from around 12 euros for a 10-day trip within Europe and from 34 euros for two weeks at non-European destinations.
