From Edipo's investigation for Gabriele Lavia to the mystery of Shakespeare's identity with Stefano Reali, passing through Lunetta Savino's Penelope and the fortieth anniversary of the Radicondoli Festival. These are some of the theatrical events on stage next weekend.
ANCONA, FERMO and PESARO - The people of Thebes are besieged by a terrible plague, caused by the wrath of Apollo. The "evil" can only be defeated once the guilty party behind the murder of the King is discovered and punished. Gabriele Lavia appears at the Roman Amphitheatre in Ancona in an evening dedicated to the figure of Oedipus, a symbol of human intelligence that does not rest until every enigma is resolved, driven by the desire for knowledge and truth and willing to bear its weight, even when it may bring ruin. A Lavia reads Oedipus Rex, from Sophocles' tragedy — a new appointment in the TAU - Teatri Antichi Riuniti programme, which over the weekend will also feature Edoardo Leo at Villa Vitali in Fermo and then at Parco Miralfiore in Pesaro, with the musical improvisations of Jonis Bascir in Ti racconto una storia. BORGIO VEREZZI (SV) - Freely inspired by Virginia Woolf's novel, Giuseppe Dipasquale directs and signs in national premiere at the Borgio Verezzi Festival Orlando, the comedy dedicated to the young and melancholy courtier of the Elizabethan era who loves writing poetry as much as hunting, wrestling with household dogs and indulging in a fine nocturnal revelry. Over the course of his very long existence, spanning nearly four centuries, Orlando will find himself living different lives across various and evocative historical periods: from treasurer and ambassador of the Queen to nomad in Turkey, ultimately establishing himself as a writer. With Viola Graziosi, Arturo Cirillo, David Coco. 25 and 26 July.
ROME - Was William Shakespeare truly the author of the works that bear his name? "It was Gigi Proietti, with whom I had the privilege of working when I was still very young," recounts Stefano Reali, "who first planted in me the doubt about who was really behind his plays." It is from this question that Shakespeare Aenigma - La prima incarnazione di John Florio is born, the new show written and directed by Stefano Reali, on stage at the TorBellaMonaca TeatroFestival. With Stefano Reali and Giusy Frallonardo, and the participation of Marco Simeoli, the show is adapted from the historical novel of the same name which, in 2025, was among the twelve best-selling works of historical fiction in Italy. 24 July.
ROINA (EN) - Penelope is no longer merely she who waits, but a woman who exercises intellectual power in a world dominated by men. Her loom becomes a weapon of political resistance, a deliberate act of sabotage through which she manages to paralyse the arrogance of the Suitors and maintain control of the kingdom in her husband's absence. While Christopher Nolan's Odyssey conquers the cinema, Lunetta Savino takes centre stage in national premiere at the Mythos Troina Festival with Il canto di Penelope, based on Margaret Atwood's novel. Directed by Marcello Cotugno. 24 July.
RADICONDOLI (SI) - With 27 titles in the programme and 17 guest companies, the Radicondoli Festival celebrates its fortieth anniversary. Among the weekend's events, Corpo felice with Federica Di Martino in the leading role, a text that Dacia Maraini has adapted for the stage from her novel, in an imaginary dialogue with a lost child.
on the topics dearest to her: women's rights, motherhood,
the education of young people.
