Indonesia’s UN Security Council bid tests non-aligned diplomacy
Jakarta wants a fifth term on the council, but faces accusations of hypocrisy and being a ‘fence-sitter’, analysts say
Jakarta’s Foreign Ministry said on Thursday that it would launch its campaign this week for a fifth term as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for 2029–2030.
The ministry said it was seeking the seat to represent the priorities of developing countries at the UN’s most powerful body and that its campaign would focus on peacekeeping, preventive diplomacy, conflict prevention and civilian protection.
“Indonesia aims to act as a bridge builder, establishing common ground, maintaining dialogue within the council and seeking practical solutions. We will also bring the voice and priorities of the Global South,” Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Yvonne Mewengkang told reporters on Thursday.
