US State of Minnesota: Life Sentences for Murder of Politician and Husband
A 59-year-old man has been sentenced to two consecutive life terms for the murders of a US politician and her husband in the state of Minnesota. The politically motivated act had made national headlines.
According to US Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, a man has been sentenced to multiple life terms for the fatal shooting of a US politician and her husband in the state of Minnesota.
The man must serve two consecutive life sentences as well as an additional 40-year prison term, Blanche announced on X.
According to media reports, the 59-year-old had pleaded guilty to two counts of murder, stalking, and weapons violations after prosecutors decided they would no longer seek the death penalty.
Manhunt for the attacker had attracted widespread attention
In June 2025, the convicted man had shot and killed Democratic Representative Melissa Hortman, a member of the Minnesota House of Representatives, and her husband Mark at the couple's home in the city of Brooklyn Park.
In a separate attack in the nearby city of Champlin, Democratic state Senator John Hoffman and his wife Yvette were shot and seriously injured. The senator was, according to earlier reports, on the road to recovery.
The attacker was taken into custody following an elaborate chase. According to police, drones, 20 special operations units, and air support were deployed during the pursuit, which led into a wooded area.
