A 61-year-old agricultural worker of Algerian origin died of cardiac arrest while working in a tomato greenhouse in Pachino, in the Syracuse area. The news was announced by the Flai Cgil.
The union, which highlighted the response times given that the ambulance came from Sortino, is calling for work stoppages during the hottest hours of the day to be extended to greenhouse work as well.
The regional ordinance of June 12 against extreme heat prohibits direct exposure to the sun, but does not mention greenhouses, where high temperatures can also be recorded. The Cgil is calling for an increase in ambulance services in the Syracuse area, which it considers insufficient.
