Engineer gets 160 hours’ community service over Queen Mary Hospital lift defects
Engineer convicted of submitting misleading documents and improperly issuing safety certificates after 24 lifts at Hong Kong hospital were found defective
A Hong Kong-registered lift engineer held liable for faulty installation work at Queen Mary Hospital’s new block has been sentenced to 160 hours of community service after being convicted of submitting misleading documents and improperly issuing safety certificates.
Eastern Court sentenced Law Wing-chai, 54, on Wednesday for two summary offences under the Lifts and Escalators Ordinance. The sentence came a month after authorities revealed that 24 of the 28 lifts in the new block of Hong Kong Island’s largest hospital had serious defects, delaying services.
In August, the Architectural Services Department said the faults had caused lifts to start or stop unevenly, halt at floor levels, or fail to open their doors. The problems included damaged electronic components, faulty wiring connections and poor installation workmanship.
