Six of the nine suspects – all Eni employees – in the explosion at the Eni depot in Calenzano on 9 December 2024, which claimed five lives, have requested a plea deal. This was announced by the Prato prosecutor's office, which has given its consent. It will be up to the preliminary investigating judge (GIP) to decide. For the other three suspects – one Eni employee and two from the company Sergen – committal for trial has been requested.
"The six main defendants have expressed their willingness to have sentences totalling" more than 14 years applied to them for the offences of manslaughter and culpable disaster, the prosecutor's office said, "waiving their right to defend themselves, which constitutes, at this stage, an important result achieved." The sentences for which a plea deal has been requested range from 2 years and 9 months to 2 years. Five of them have requested that the sentence be substituted with community service, while for one the request is for a suspended sentence and non-entry of the conviction in the criminal record.
