ExclusiveThe Weeknd’s ‘Hong Kong’ captures nostalgia for bygone era, video director says

Canadian singer fused Faye Wong’s 1993 Cantopop hit ‘Seasonal Wind’ into the song as a tribute to the late 1980s and early 1990s

A new viral song by Canadian singer The Weeknd, “Hong Kong”, is a love letter to the city, the director of the accompanying video has said, adding that he believes nostalgia for the late 1980s and early 1990s era is the secret ingredient that has captured the hearts of many.

US director Evan Larsen told the South China Morning Post exclusively on Monday that the video was produced in about a week, shortly before its debut at the singer’s concert at Kai Tak Stadium on Saturday as part of his Asian 2026 tour.

Abel Tesfaye – the 36-year-old singer, songwriter, record producer and actor known as The Weeknd – fused Faye Wong’s 1993 Cantopop number titled “Seasonal Wind” into the song as a tribute to the era.
