The General Director of Triennale Milano, Carla Morogallo, has received the first edition of the national civic award "Stesicoro", the highest honour established by the Municipal Administration of Gioia Tauro and promoted by the Department of Public Education, Schools and Culture. The award, in honour of the poet Stesicoro, one of the most illustrious representatives of Magna Graecia, aims to pay tribute to figures of national and international prominence who, through their commitment, have contributed to the growth of culture, research, the arts and the dissemination of knowledge.
For the first edition, the municipal council, upon proposal by the Culture Councillor Domenica Speranza, unanimously voted to confer the Award on Carla Morogallo, born in Gioia Tauro and director of one of the most authoritative cultural institutions at an international level, a point of reference for architecture, design, visual and performing arts. The award ceremony was held in the presence of Mayor Simona Scarcella, Speranza, Marco Ercoles, classical philologist and associate professor of Greek Language and Literature at the University of Bologna and one of the leading contemporary scholars of Stesicoro, and Lucia Lepore, former professor of Archaeology of Magna Graecia and Archaeological Research Methodologies at the University of Florence. During the evening, honorary citizenship was also conferred upon Master goldsmith Michele Affidato.
"With the conferral of the 'Stesicoro' Award on Carla Morogallo," said Scarcella, "we open a new and important chapter in the cultural history of our city. The Award was created with the intention of honouring those who, through merit and culture, help build a bridge between our identity, deeply rooted in Magna Graecia, and the contemporary world. With Carla Morogallo we celebrate a native of Gioia Tauro who, with merit and competence, leads one of the foremost international cultural institutions and concretely embodies the values of culture, memory, freedom and dialogue that the Award seeks to promote."
"Receiving the 'Stesicoro' Award," said Morogallo, "represents a deeply felt emotion and a great honour, because it comes from the city where I was born and to which I remain profoundly attached. Culture has the task of creating connections, generating knowledge and offering new prospects for growth for individuals and communities. Receiving this award strengthens the awareness of the value of one's roots and the responsibility to continue working so that culture may increasingly become an instrument of dialogue, openness and the future."
