US senators delay effort to permanently ban Chinese cars
Proposed ban is a move to ensure that hundreds of thousands of US automotive jobs are not at risk of ‘total domination’ by Chinese car firms
The two US senators backing a permanent legislative ban on Chinese cars in the United States agreed on Thursday to delay their plan to use a fast track procedure to win Senate approval until next week, to seek the support of a lone holdout.
Republican Senator Bernie Moreno and Democratic Senator Elissa Slotkin had planned to seek approval for the procedure – which requires unanimous Senate backing – on Thursday, the same day that US President Donald Trump met China’s President Xi Jinping in Washington.
But instead they will delay things and hold talks with Republican Senator Rand Paul, who had raised some concerns, in an effort to convince him to allow passage, congressional aides said.
