A 21-year-old man died in the early afternoon today after being taken ill in the waters of Cala Gonone, off Palmasera beach, on the eastern coast of Sardinia.
The young man, a foreign national, was working as a seasonal employee at a tourist village in the area. After lunch, he went into the sea for a swim and felt unwell while swimming. He was brought back to shore by bystanders on the beach and emergency services were called.
The 118 emergency operators, who also intervened with an Areus helicopter, were unable to save his life.
The carabinieri also arrived on the scene to investigate the circumstances.
