Ferraris fastest in first free practice at the Hungarian Grand Prix. At the Hungaroring, just outside Budapest, Charles Leclerc set the best time of 1'19"075, leading by almost half a second over Max Verstappen's Red Bull (+0"484) and the other Ferrari of teammate Lewis Hamilton (+0"543).
Fifth fastest was George Russell's Mercedes (+0"991), while championship leader Kimi Antonelli did not take part in FP1, temporarily making way for young Danish driver Frederik Vesti (seventh fastest time). Mercedes chose their third driver to fulfil the obligation of running a rookie and to take advantage of his support in the development of the car.
Towards the end of the session, Leclerc stopped a few minutes before the chequered flag due to a likely problem with his Ferrari, which returned to the pits only thanks to being pushed by the mechanics of the Maranello team.
