ASTANA, October 29. /TASS/. Kazakhstan imported 6.4 bln cubic meters of gas in January-September 2026, compared with 4.7 bln cubic meters for the whole of 2025, with Russia among its suppliers, BES.media reported, citing a response from the country’s Energy Ministry to an inquiry.
Meanwhile, Kazakhstan’s marketable gas production declined by 10% in the first nine months of the year. According to the ministry, the country produced 17.6 bln cubic meters of marketable gas in January-September 2026.
The ministry attributed the increase in imports to rising domestic consumption. It explained that agreements with Russia provide for gas purchases in the event of a decline in domestic supplies, such as during unplanned shutdowns at major marketable gas producers in the heating season.
As BES.media noted, the ministry did not provide gas import figures for January-September 2025, making it impossible to compare purchase volumes for the corresponding periods. The ministry also declined to disclose the cost of imported gas, citing commercial confidentiality.
