Mumbai: Mumbai Traffic Police penalised more than 12,500 vehicles for using ‘dazzling’ or fancy headlights during a special drive from June 1 to Oct 26, issuing fines totalling up to Rs 88 lakh.
Traffic Police took action under the Maharashtra Motor Vehicles Rules and
Motor Vehicles Act after receiving complaints about motorists using illegal flashing lights, LED bars and fancy headlights. Officials said these lights impaired other motorists’ vision, endangered their safety and increased the risk of crashes.
Officials said the campaign would continue and warned motorists against using unauthorised flashing lights or LED bars on their vehicles at night. Traffic police advised drivers to use low beam while driving at night.
