The Mexican goalkeeper
Guillermo "Memo" Ochoa has announced his retirement from football at the age of 41, bringing to a close a career spanning more than twenty years that culminated this year with his participation in his sixth consecutive World Cup with Mexico. The former Club América goalkeeper announced the decision with a message on his social media: "I gave everything, I left everything at my clubs and with my national team, and today I hand over my gloves."
Ochoa thanked his family, teammates and fans, emphasising that he carries with him "the affection of millions of people and the peace of mind of having given everything for Mexico." He made his debut in 2004 with América and also played in France, Spain, Belgium, Portugal, Cyprus and Italy, with Salernitana. With his national team he accumulated 154 caps, a record for a Mexican goalkeeper, and 12 World Cup appearances, joining the select group of footballers to have appeared at six editions of the World Cup.
