The Court of Vibo Valentia has sentenced Michele Fiorillo, 40 years old, to 11 years in prison. He was accused of being among those responsible for the attempted quadruple murder committed on October 3, 2004 in Piscopio, a district of Vibo Valentia, targeting Rocco and Nicola Bellissimo, Cosmo Pistininzi and Pietro Pasquale Cannatelli. For Fiorillo, defended by attorney Diego Brancia, the Prosecution had requested a sentence of 20 years.
The incident occurred during celebrations for the Patron Saint and was triggered by trivial motives. According to the prosecution, Fiorillo was part of a group composed of other individuals — who faced separate trials — in the action that led to the shooting and wounding of the four victims.
The charge had initially been included in the "Portosalvo" proceedings, but subsequently followed an independent course. The district preliminary hearing judge Gilda Danila Romano had in fact ordered the separation of the charge, detaching it from the other counts and forwarding the case files to the collegiate Court of Vibo Valentia for ordinary trial proceedings relating to the 2004 violent incident.
The Court did not fully accept the Prosecution's position. The judges excluded the aggravating circumstance of premeditation, while recognizing the mafia-related aggravating circumstance. A decision that affected the sentence, set at 11 years in prison, nine fewer than the 20 years requested by the public prosecutor.
Fiorillo, currently subject to the 41-bis prison regime and son of Pino Fiorillo, who was wounded in the 1995 ambush in Briatico alongside Saverio Razionale, has been identified by investigators as a prominent figure in the 'Ndrangheta locale of Piscopio, which in judicial reconstructions is linked to the structure recognized by the "Crimine" of Polsi.
