With "A Midsummer Night's Dream," the Teatro di San Carlo bids farewell to its audience before the summer break starting Saturday, July 25 (8:00 PM), with five performances through Friday, July 31. Paul Chalmer's creation, set to music by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, returns to Naples' opera house seven years after its last staging. The Ballet and Ballet School of the Teatro di San Carlo will take center stage, under the direction of Renato Zanella, who, 30 minutes before each performance, will welcome the audience for the "Incontro agli specchi" (Meeting at the Mirrors): an introduction to the show in the Salone degli Specchi, featuring surprise guests and live music. Philippe Béran will lead the Orchestra and Chorus of the Teatro di San Carlo, with the latter prepared by Fabrizio Cassi. The choreography assistant is Duilio Ingraffia, with Guido Sarno serving as Maître de Ballet. In this production by the Naples opera house, Pasqualino Marino designed the sets, with costumes by Elena Mannini and lighting by Nunzio Perrella. The solo vocal performances will be provided by soprano Juliette Di Bello and mezzo-soprano Gabriela Korzystka.
Paul Chalmer's choreography was born from a project created seventeen years ago for the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, with Beppe Menegatti and Carla Fracci, for whom the role of Hippolyta was conceived. For the return to the Teatro di San Carlo, the Canadian choreographer has renewed his creation in light of the Company's artistic growth, introducing a partial redistribution of roles, new choreographic balances, and additional symphonic pieces by Mendelssohn, without altering the narrative framework inspired by Shakespeare's text. Three casts will alternate in the principal roles. On July 25 and 30, Titania and Oberon, rulers of the Fairy Kingdom, will be performed by Anna Chiara Amirante and Alessandro Staiano. On July 26 and 31, the Fairy Kingdom passes to Luisa Ieluzzi and Daniele Di Donato. On July 28, the final cast alternation features the pairing of Claudia D'Antonio and Danilo Notaro. Across these three performances, Hippolyta and Theseus will be portrayed by Anna Chiara Amirante and Stanislao Capissi, with Salvatore Manzo in the role of Mercury.
