Jens Weidmann, chairman of the supervisory board of Commerzbank, has called on UniCredit to begin talks with Commerzbank's management. "The management board and the supervisory board of Commerzbank have repeatedly stressed that they are willing to do so," Weidmann told the daily newspaper Handelsblatt. "Even if we would have wished things were different, the majority positions at the upcoming general meeting are clear," he added. "It is now a matter of defining, through constructive talks, the key points for the bank's employees, shareholders and customers," Weidmann stated. With his remarks, Weidmann simultaneously signalled that Commerzbank is now abandoning its fight for independence.
