Hong Kong private secondary sector expands as local universities’ reputation grows
Education Bureau says stronger economy and shifting parental preferences drove 56.3 per cent growth in private secondary schools sector since 2021-22
The number of private secondary schools in Hong Kong has risen by more than half in five years as demand for alternative curricula grows and new operators seek to attract families drawn by the city’s highly ranked universities, education authorities and principals have said.
Between 2021-22 and 2025-26, the number of private secondary institutions increased from 16 to 25, a jump of 56.3 per cent, Education Bureau figures show.
Leaders at schools offering alternative curriculum pathways said that more mainland Chinese and overseas students were considering Hong Kong universities due to the institutions’ rising global reputation amid geopolitical concerns.
Over the same period, the number of private primary schools also rose from 62 to 65, up 4.8 per cent.
