In New York: Zelensky Announces Meeting with Trump
Ukrainian head of state Zelensky has announced a meeting with US President Trump during his visit to New York this week. He had previously spoken with Trump by phone. The meeting could "change many things," Zelensky said.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he had agreed with US President Donald Trump to meet in New York. "We have agreed to meet in New York, and this meeting could change many things," Zelensky wrote on the online service X following a phone call with Trump. There is a "diplomatic dynamic," he added.
Zelensky did not provide details on when the meeting is to take place. Starting Tuesday, the general debate of the UN General Assembly is being held in New York, where both Trump and Zelensky are expected to deliver speeches.
"Ready to Take Truly Decisive Steps"
Since Trump's return to the White House, the United States has been attempting to bring an end to Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine, which has now lasted more than four and a half years. Previous rounds of talks involving negotiators from the US, Russia, and Ukraine have yielded no breakthrough.
Most recently, the US has been working to revive the stalled negotiations over ending the war in Ukraine. US envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff traveled to Moscow two weeks ago and, for the first time, also to Kyiv.
There are "proposals for measures to de-escalate and address fundamental security issues — energy security, food security, and the protection of human lives," Zelensky stated following his phone call with Trump. "We are working with the American team and are ready to take truly decisive steps."
