Markets live updates: Wall Street rises despite hot inflation likely to trigger a Fed rate hike this week,

The odds of the US Federal Reserve raising interest rates this week jumped to an almost sure thing after August inflation data came in higher than expected.

Despite this, Wall Street's key equity indices all rose on Friday after three days of selling, while the ASX is poised to arrest its recent slump with a small gain today.

Good morning and welcome to another day on the ABC markets and finance blog.

Stephen Letts from ABC business team limbering up for a blow-by-blow coverage of the day's events, where every post is hopefully a winner, but none should be construed as financial advice.

Wall Street closed the week higher with the key equities indices gaining around 1% despite hotter than expected inflation data shortening the odds of the Fed raising rates this week.

That shift in sentiment might be enough to arrest the ASX's five session, 3% retreat last week.

When trading closed on Saturday morning, ASX 200 futures pointed to 0.2% gain today.

It's a quiet day data wise, but for macro-wonks RBA Assistant Governor and chief economist Sarah Hunter will, you guessed it, sitting down for another "fireside" chat.

It could be noted though, nothing much has changed nor has any fresh data been published since her fireside chat last week, so don't expect any great revelations.

So, stoke the embers, and as always, the game's afoot, so let's get blogging.
