Hong Kong’s Generation Y unhappiest amid housing and economic pressures, poll finds

Hong Kong’s happiness index falls to 5.87, staying below the passing level of six out of 10 for a fourth year, but remains above its 2024 low

Hong Kong’s Generation Y residents – those aged 30 to 45 – are the city’s unhappiest age group, largely because of dissatisfaction with economic and housing conditions, a poll has found.

A survey of 1,039 adults by HK.WeCare, a platform set up under the non-profit organisation Wofoo Social Enterprises, put the Hong Kong Happiness Index at 5.87 out of 10. The score remained below the passing level for a fourth consecutive year, despite an overall upwards trend since 2024.

More than 40 per cent of residents reported moderate to severe depressive symptoms. Respondents also reported only moderate levels of community belonging and trust, scoring 3.13 and 2.81, respectively, out of five. Both factors were found to be directly linked to happiness.
