"A position of this kind (against wars - 'we will organise the deserters', ed.) I don't know how it can be reconciled with the party's policy." This is what Romano Prodi, former Prime Minister and former President of the European Commission, said about the words spoken by the secretary of the young democrats Virginia Libero in Reggio Emilia. He made the comment while appearing on the Radio24 programme 'Immagini, uno sguardo sulla attualità'.
"When I heard her," Prodi said, "I said let's hope she grows up, because if there is someone who has always fought for peace, it is me, but here we find ourselves faced with a very clear choice, a policy compelled by a series of circumstances that have unleashed an incredible war. A position of this kind I don't know how it can be reconciled with the party's policy. I believe this is a statement that falls outside the vision the PD is pursuing, therefore a proposal that does not belong to the PD and that has never even been discussed within the PD, as far as I know. So let's take it as a mistake of error, as Topo Gigio would say."
