The Rome prosecutor's office has opened a file on the death in Barcelona of Samuele Spinelli, 28, from Florence, who died after being detained by police on May 29 while in an agitated state inside a shop. According to La Nazione, Catalan doctors believe he may have died from an overdose, but the family is seeking clarification regarding marks found on his back and wrists, and has filed a report with Italian authorities. Security camera footage shows the 28-year-old running into a shop, appearing confused and agitated. Three people follow him inside, two women and a man. Police and medical personnel are then seen intervening. He is placed face down on the ground, the newspaper reports, with his hands behind his back, and is restrained. The family's lawyer, Diego Capano, explains that they administered "pharmacological restraint, injecting him with a sedative, but he then went into cardiac arrest." Officers then removed the cable ties, turned him onto his back, and paramedics began resuscitation efforts before he was hospitalised in a coma. He died three days later. Hospital doctors told La Nazione that traces of methamphetamine were found in his blood, leading them to suspect an overdose. An autopsy was carried out in Barcelona and another in Florence, and the family is awaiting the results. Catalan doctors cited "multi-organ failure" as the cause of death. His funeral was held in the Tuscan capital two days ago.
