Wide black blazer, dark jeans tucked into ankle boots, and her ever-present braids taming her long grey hair: Patti Smith is in the Vatican Apostolic Palace, waiting to have a private meeting with Pope Leo. She is accompanied by Father Antonio Spadaro, Undersecretary for Culture, who frequently collaborates with Smith on various initiatives always in support of peace and their shared commitment to many issues. Smith recently concluded a series of concerts in Italy, including a very well-attended one at the Circus Maximus. A Chicago native like Robert Prevost, an icon of rock music but also an artist and poet, Smith will turn 80 in December.
