Mumbai: With the arrest of two persons, Charkop Police busted a bogus call centre where operators posed as customer care representatives of e-commerce platforms and duped their overseas customers. Police said two key accused persons, including a woman, are wanted.

Based on information, police raided an apartment at Charkop on Oct 26. A bogus call centre was operating from the premises. Explaining the modus operandi, police said the key accused, Shahrukh and

Simran, used their contacts to illegally obtain customer grievance-related data from e-commerce platforms. They shared this data with operators working at the bogus call centre. Posing as customer care representatives, the operators then dialled the overseas customers of these e-commerce platforms and discussed their grievances. They would scare the customers by saying that their account would be closed or their order wouldn’t be delivered if they did not make payments. Police are still trying to figure out the total amount obtained by conning customers in this manner.

Two of the operators, Asif Qureshi and Smarth P, have been arrested.
