WASHINGTON, October 11. /TASS/. The United States does not need Canadian hockey paraphernalia, President Donald Trump said.

"With Canada, we lose $90 billion a year. I like the national anthem, ‘Oh, Canada’, but I don't really have to listen to it, and we don't need hockey sticks, we don't need face masks, we don't need the kind of stuff they sell us," he told his supporters in the state of Tennessee.

US representative in the trade negotiations Jamieson Greer said in August that Ottawa had rejected what Washington considered to be a beneficial trade deal. This is why US 50 percent import duties on some Canadian goods came into effect on August 22. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed he will suspend trade negotiations with the US and promised retaliatory duties. He said that a "trade war" had begun between the US and Canada, initiated by Washington.

Later Trump said the US plans to impose 50-percent duties on Canadian cars, auto parts, and steel starting January 1, 2027. On September 8, Ottawa’s retaliatory duties on American products came into effect.
