Markets live updates: Wall Street closes higher after disappointing jobs report, ASX set to gain

A much-weaker-than-expected US jobs report, coupled with downward revisions of early jobs growth, wound back expectations of a rate rise from the Fed this month and boosted Wall Street stocks after a turbulent week.

The ASX looks like maintaining its momentum from Friday with futures trading pointing to a gain on opening.

Good morning

Good morning and welcome to another day on the ABC markets and finance blog.

Stephen Letts from ABC business team limbering up for a blow-by-blow coverage of the day's events, where every post is hopefully a winner, but none should be construed as financial advice.

It may be a public holiday across large swathes of the nation, but not on the ASX, nor here in the ABC Business Unit's Room 101 where we will be hard at work sifting the truths from the untruths.

Wall Street closed the week higher with weaker than expected jobs data chilling expectations of another rate rise from the Fed this month.

The ASX looks to have regained a bit of its mojo. Futures trading, at the close on Saturday morning (AEST), pointed to a 0.3% gain today following Friday's 0.8% rally.

It's a quietish day on the data front with only the Inflation Gauge and S&P Global's Australian services PMI set for release.

Anyway, the game's afoot, so let's get blogging.
