MOSCOW, October 6. /TASS/. Moscow hopes other countries will follow Russia’s lead and recognize the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, Russian Security Council Secretary Sergey Shoigu said.
"Russia-Afghanistan partnership is steadily advancing across all areas, including security, political contacts and trade and economic cooperation. Russia’s official recognition of Afghanistan in July 2025 helped promote this," Shoigu said at a meeting with Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi.
"We hope that other countries will follow Russia’s example. Moreover, virtually all countries in the region are actively cooperating directly with the current Afghan leadership," the Russian Security Council secretary said.
In 2021, after the United States decided to withdraw its troops from Afghanistan, supporters of the Taliban movement took control of the country. On April 17, 2025, Russia’s Supreme Court granted an administrative lawsuit filed by the Prosecutor General seeking to suspend the ban on the Taliban’s activities in Russia.
As Russia’s Foreign Ministry noted, removing the Taliban’s terrorist designation opens the way for establishing full-fledged partnership with Kabul in the interests of the Russian and Afghan peoples.
In the summer of 2025, the Russian Foreign Ministry said Moscow had recognized the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan and that the country’s ambassador arrived in Moscow on July 1.
