He allegedly defended another inmate from a homophobic attack and was beaten by a group of prisoners as a result. The victim is an Italian national and the case has gone to trial at a court in Bologna. Three North Africans are on trial: two Tunisians aged 26 and 33 and a Moroccan aged 24, who on 31 August 2022, together with others who remain unidentified, are accused of having attacked the victim at the Dozza prison with razor blades, sticks, iron pipes and bent forks. The charge is aggravated personal injury, which resulted in the victim's inability to carry out ordinary daily activities for more than 40 days. At the request of the injured party, who has joined the proceedings as a civil claimant represented by lawyer Stella Pancari, the Ministry of Justice has been cited as civilly liable, with the citation aimed at obtaining compensation for damages arising from the offence being prosecuted. The three defendants are represented by lawyers Felicia Casciano, Suela Fani and Luca Sebastiani.
"The facts of the case paint a picture of a brutal and unjustified attack that took place inside Dozza prison. My client," says lawyer Pancari, "intervened courageously to put an end to a homophobically motivated assault on another inmate, paying a heavy price for this act. We are confident that the responsibilities of the defendants and of the prison facility will be rigorously established."
