Kalyan: Khadakpada police have seized a Mercedes-Benz and detained its 23-year-old driver, Komil Anil Gaikar, in connection with a hit-and-run accident that killed a 25-year-old man during his morning walk in Kalyan West on Wednesday.

The car is registered in the name of Gaikar’s father, Anil Gaikar, a businessman.

The deceased, Sunil Koli, who worked at a nursery, was out for his morning walk near Niki Nagar between 5.30 am and 6 am on Oct 21 when the speeding car allegedly knocked him down. The impact reportedly threw him off the road, and he landed inside an archway along the roadside. He died at the spot.

According to eyewitnesses, the driver allegedly fled without stopping to help Koli. Khadakpada police examined CCTV footage from the area and traced the Mercedes-Benz suspected to have been involved in the accident. The vehicle was subsequently seized and Gaikar detained for questioning.

The car also had a sticker reading “Member of Maharashtra Legislative Assembly” on its front, raising questions about its origin and authorisation.

“We have detained Komil Gaikar, who is a student. We are investigating where the car owner obtained the sticker, whether it was authorised and the circumstances under which it was displayed on the vehicle,” said Rajesh Khedkar, senior police inspector of Khadakpada police station.

Police are conducting further inquiries into the accident and the circumstances surrounding the display of the sticker. Further investigation is underway.
