Mumbai: The BMC removed 38 unauthorized stalls in the Andheri (West) area as part of its ongoing ‘Pedestrian First’ campaign.
The action was carried out at Andheri (West) railway station, Vile Parle (West) railway station, Jogeshwari (West) railway station, Veera Desai Marg and Swami Vivekanand Marg. In the first phase of the campaign, encroachments are being removed from 200 footpaths across Mumbai. Large-scale action under the K-West Ward office has been underway since last week.
The ‘Pedestrian First’ campaign has been undertaken to make footpaths in Mumbai available for pedestrians. Accordingly, encroachments will be removed on 27 roads in the Vile Parle area. Emphasis has been laid on making obstruction-free the footpaths in areas with heavy pedestrian movement on Swami Vivekanand Marg. In the first phase, encroachments on six footpaths were removed in the Andheri (West) station area, Vile Parle (West) station area, Jogeshwari station area, Ram Ganesh Gadkari Marg, Veera Desai Marg and Swami Vivekanand Marg.
The BMC said the drive has cleared pedestrian passage at Andheri West station, Vile Parle West station, Jogeshwari station and Swami Vivekanand Marg. According to the civic body, the clearance is expected to help reduce vehicular and pedestrian congestion during peak hours and provide obstruction-free pedestrian access towards Swami Vivekanand Marg.
