Province of Västmanland: Several Injured in Attack at Swedish School
A man attacked people with a weapon at a Swedish school on Wednesday afternoon. There are several injured in the city located in the province of Västmanland. The alleged perpetrator is reported to be in custody.
A man injured several people with a weapon at a school in the Swedish city of Fagersta. According to Swedish media, the weapon is believed to be a sword or machete. The alleged perpetrator is in police custody, the municipality of Fagersta announced. The city is located approximately 170 kilometers northwest of the capital Stockholm. The alarm was received at 2 p.m. Surrounding schools were evacuated.
"We have an ongoing operation in the area – that is all we can say at this time," a police spokesperson told Swedish media. There is no danger to the public. Media reported several ambulances and a police helicopter at the scene.
"The police are on the ground and working very intensively on the incident," Swedish Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer told the television channel SVT. "The government is in close contact with the police and is continuously monitoring developments."
Secondary School with 500 Students
In a text message to the broadcaster SVT, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson wrote that the background to the incident remains unclear. "I ask everyone to let the police and emergency services work without interference. Our thoughts are with all those affected."
The leader of the Swedish Social Democrats, Magdalena Andersson, commented on the platform X: "Terrible news from Fagersta. My thoughts are with those affected and all who are touched by this." All of Sweden stands alongside Fagersta in this difficult hour, she added.
The school in question is reportedly a secondary school in the municipality of Fagersta. According to the broadcaster SVT, 500 students attend the school.
