An Australian Army soldier has died and five others have been injured during a training exercise at Mount Bundey, south-east of Darwin.

A statement from the Department of Defence confirmed the incident occurred yesterday but provided no further details.

"Next of kin has been notified," the statement said.

"We request that the privacy of Defence members and families is respected at this time."

The Mount Bundey training area is used by the Australian army and its allies for live fire training.
