BELGRADE, October 26. /TASS/. Serbia’s new government to be formed by the winning opposition movement Student List will not impose sanctions against Russia, Jovo Bakic, a Student List representative, said.

"We respect Russia as a great power and our historically important partner, and, in many cases, our defender. There will be no changes in this regard. <…> Serbian sanctions would change nothing for Russia but from a symbolic point of view they would look negative," he told the RT Balkan television channel.

Serbia "has endured UN sanctions and knows full well what an ordeal that is," he added.

When asked about the European Union’s demand that Serbia refuse to receive Russian energy sources, Bakic said, "it's our prerogative to act in our national interests, not to please foreigners."

Serbia’s former President Aleksandar Vucic said earlier that after winning the parliamentary elections, the Student List would impose anti-Russian sanctions by the spring of 2027.

Serbia held snap elections to the National Assembly, or unicameral parliament, on October 25. With 96.47% of the vote tally reports processed, the Republic Electoral Commission announced that United Serbia, led by former President Aleksandar Vucic, had lost to the opposition Student List, receiving 39.27% of the vote against 52.57%, respectively.
