Pools with non-compliant suction outlets face closure. This is set out in an amendment to the sport decree-law currently being examined in the Chamber of Deputies. The bipartisan amendment, put forward by the Culture Committee and supported by all parliamentary groups, applies to "all pools, public, private, open to the public or collective," as stated by Lega MP Laura Cavandoli.
If the deficiency is not remedied, the proposal provides for the closure of the facility. The amendment, as explained by Undersecretary for Parliamentary Relations Paolo Barelli, was drawn up "also in light of recent accidents, in order to ensure that pools have all the necessary technological safeguards in place to prevent suction flows from posing risks to swimmers." The amendment was tabled in the Chamber during the afternoon, set aside, and will be voted on tomorrow.
"The Culture Committee amendment," Barelli added, "concerns pools for public use, which must ensure water circulation for purification purposes in full safety for users, with particular reference to suction methods. Grilles, drain covers and other fittings must prevent suction effects on any part of swimmers' bodies."
