As has now become customary, Milan is transformed into a stage for dance with OnDance, the event conceived by Roberto Bolle, which from September 11 to 13 will engage the city with meetings, lessons, dance evenings and, for the first time, a march that on Sunday afternoon will lead two thousand dancers from the Castello Sforzesco to Parco Sempione with a widespread choreography uniting 30 dance styles.
"This year we chose happiness as the guiding theme of the event," Bolle explained, "because I believe it is one of the most authentic gifts that movement and dance can offer. When you dance together, differences fade away, distances shrink and something special is created that belongs to everyone." The new march "expresses the spirit of the event in an original way, conveying the full richness and variety of dance languages," he added.
The heart of the three-day event will be the Castello Sforzesco, where 27 dance classes will be held, ranging from flamenco to yoga, from Modern dance lessons to a Repertoire class taught by La Scala principal dancer Martina Arduino, to the Choreographic Workshop. Also at the Castle, the OnDancepod podcast will be recorded in front of a live audience, and a round table dedicated to the future of dance is planned, organised as part of the Milano Che Danza programme — a series running from September 3 to October 3. In this ninth edition of OnDance, Piazza Duomo will instead host two dance evenings: Friday the 11th dedicated to tango in collaboration with Milano Tango, and Saturday the 12th to swing, specifically the Lindy Hop, in collaboration with Spirit de Milan.
"We are delighted to welcome Roberto Bolle to the Castello Sforzesco and Piazza Duomo, iconic landmarks that for three days will be filled with the energy of dance and the participation of thousands of citizens. We are pleased that this year it enriches the programme of Milano Danza, the new cultural project," concluded Milan's Councillor for Culture Tommaso Sacchi, "which from September 4 to October 4 will make dance a protagonist of the city's cultural life, spanning theatres, museums, public spaces and symbolic locations with shows, performances, meetings and activities open to citizens and visitors." The closing event, on Sunday the 13th at 5 pm, will be the march led by Roberto Bolle, featuring an original choreography created specifically for OnDance by Stefania Ballone, alternating with a playlist built around the thirty musical genres represented by the participants.
