After almost twenty years of collaboration with Marco Bellocchio, Fabio Lovino has decided to document the human and artistic universe of one of the most important auteurs in contemporary cinema. He does so in Marco Bellocchio - La porta della realtà, the documentary that will be presented in Official Selection - Out of Competition at the 79th edition of the Locarno Film Festival on August 11. The film, produced by Loft Produzioni and Reggatta Production, will be released in Italian cinemas on August 27, distributed by Lucky Red.
Through previously unseen images and testimonies, from actors such as Fabrizio Gifuni, who describes him as a "free artist," to Pierfrancesco Favino, who speaks about the difficulty and commitment involved in making a film with him, along with his loyal collaborators, family members, the film delves into the heart of his creative process and traces the journey of a director who has continually renewed his own cinematic language, experiencing an extraordinary creative period and earning international recognition, without ever losing the depth and freedom of his vision.
The documentary shows Marco Bellocchio at work on set for the first time and chronicles his daily approach to directing. Alongside him, artists, friends and family members: from his wife and editor Francesca Calvelli to his children Elena and Pier Giorgio, as well as colleagues and fellow travellers such as Roberto Herlitzka, Pierfrancesco Favino, Fabrizio Gifuni, Marco Tullio Giordana, Daniele Ciprì, Francesco di Giacomo and Giuseppe Lanci.
