In a lengthy statement on FIFA's website, world football president Gianni Infantino attacked the media regarding the World Cup, or at least the portion of the media represented by "all those who, consumed by hatred and criticism, missed our beautiful game. To those who, behind their pens and their papers, behind their screens, spread hatred and false rumours, I want to say that while you sit on the sidelines, we at FIFA are on the front lines organising, working hard and delivering the most beautiful show in the world. While you divide, we unite," Infantino wrote.
"We have not recorded any episodes of violence, only joy and happiness," the head of football continued. "While you were spreading hatred, we worked tirelessly to unite two countries at war. Iran entered the United States without incidents or conflicts, and when the Iranian team began to play, all the chants against them turned into a single anthem. This is the power of football, the Team Melli obtained visas to enter because football is synonymous with peace."
"You mentioned the few people who were denied visas and overlooked the millions who were granted them, coming from every corner of the world," Infantino continued his attack. "Or, when football brought Haiti into the world spotlight, a country that many cannot or choose not to visit, perhaps it is time to put down pens and keyboards and show a little respect to the teams that played with their hearts."
"This World Cup celebrated the best of humanity, and we at FIFA could not be more proud or more moved to experience these moments of love, joy and unity," he concluded.
