Apparent Medical Emergency: Driver Injures Pedestrians in Hofgeismar
In the Hessian town of Hofgeismar, a 68-year-old man drove his car through a pedestrian zone and crashed into a department store. Eight people were injured. The driver apparently suffered a medical emergency.
On Friday morning, a car drove into a department store in the pedestrian zone of Hofgeismar (Kassel). According to police, the 68-year-old driver had already attracted attention at a pedestrian crossing beforehand.
Witnesses wanted to approach the man because he appeared to be having medical problems. Shortly afterwards, the Mercedes drove into the pedestrian zone at high speed.
Several Pedestrians Struck
The car struck several pedestrians in the zone. The Mercedes also collided with outdoor displays belonging to shops and crashed into the display window of the department store. The vehicle came to a stop shortly thereafter.
According to the current state of investigations, eight people were injured. They suffered abrasions, bruises or shock.
Four of the injured were taken to hospitals as a precautionary measure. No serious injuries have been identified among those affected based on findings so far.
Driver in Critical Condition
Bystanders provided first aid to the driver immediately after the accident. The 68-year-old received emergency medical treatment and was subsequently taken to a hospital. His condition is reported to be critical.
Police believe the man suffered a medical emergency, which is currently considered to be the cause of the accident based on the state of investigations.
Significant Property Damage
An expert assessor has also been brought in as part of the investigation. According to police, the property damage in the pedestrian zone is significant, though an exact figure cannot yet be determined.
The accident site remains cordoned off.
