The repercussions of the lost 2026 World Cup final are still intense in Argentina. A petition launched on the Change.org platform calling for a review of the match, won 1-0 by Spain, has already gathered over 90,000 signatures.
The initiative was promoted by Argentine fan Gisela Sánchez, who contests the performance of Slovenian referee Slavko Vinčić in the game played last Sunday. In the petition, she asks FIFA to reassess the decisions made during the match, believing that the refereeing had a direct influence on the result. Despite the accusations, the petition presents no concrete evidence in support of alleged errors sufficient to justify a potential annulment of the match. Furthermore, popular campaigns of this type have no legal or sporting effect on FIFA's decisions.
On the other hand, another accusation weighs against the "Celeste," coming from the international press and social media: that they are disrespectful and do not know how to lose. A claim rejected by Argentine President Javier Milei, according to whom those who criticise his fellow citizens are "envious."
"Argentina's problem is that we are attractive, we don't go unnoticed, people are envious of us and we are good at almost everything," wrote the ultra-liberal leader, who also posted on social media an AI-generated image of himself opening his shirt to reveal the national football team's jersey.
